The most significant relationship you'll ever have is the one with yourself.

You might agree with that statement. If so, I hope you find the resources and tools I’ll be presenting to be a helpful addition to your practice of Self-Love.

Or, you might quickly find reasons to discount, dismiss or argue with this concept.  Let me tell you — I’ve heard it all before. I used to be an expert in finding reasons not to prioritize the relationship with myself, to practice self-love.  My inner dialogue was full of objections like:

  • "That's selfish."

  • "That's not true. What about my children? Husband? Higher Power? Mom? Dad? Family? Amazing Friends? My Cat?!"

  • "That's childish and immature."

  • “Get over yourself.”

  • “Who do you think you are?” (this one comes with a New York accent)

Despite all these doubts and objections, a small part of me believed that loving myself would help me be a better partner, parent, friend, and therapist. I came to realize that loving myself was beneficial for all my relationships. As I got to know the impact of self-love, my perspective truly shifted – I trusted and embraced this new way of thinking.  It's important to understand that while there is a risk of becoming self-centered if you only focus on yourself, that’s not the message I'm conveying. Your relationship with yourself is the foundation, the one you have most influence over.  How you love yourself will impact, directly and indirectly, how you show up for other people.

The most significant relationship you'll ever have is the one with yourself.

What are your knee-jerk thoughts and reactions to that statement?

What would you being doing differently in your relationship (with yourself) if you believed this to be true?

I encourage you to nurture the relationship you have with yourself.  What could that look like for you? Is there one small step you can take in that direction?

Stay tuned for a guided visualization “Self-Love Series” I will be posting here in the coming months.
